Fundamentals of Software Architecture

A five-part blog series on the INNOQ website: what software architecture is, the terms behind it, how it is done, who does it, and where it is heading.

Fundamentals of Software Architecture cover

Fundamentals of Software Architecture is a five-part blog series in which Gernot Starke walks through the essentials of the discipline, from first principles to the day-to-day reality of architecture work. It starts with an analogy to building architecture and ends with an honest look at how large systems really evolve. Each part stands on its own, but together they form a compact introduction to how arc42 thinks about the subject.

The series

  1. Building, purpose, aesthetics — what the ancient idea of architecture teaches us about software.
  2. Terms — the vocabulary: building blocks, structures, decisions and concepts.
  3. Tasks and activities — how is it done? — the actual work of designing and documenting an architecture.
  4. Who does it? — the role of the architect and how it plays out in teams.
  5. Where does it go from here? — decisions under uncertainty, feedback and the reality of large systems.
